Project completion period: 2021.-2023.
Project description: For the first time in Riga's history, the city center has been freed from transit freight traffic, thanks to the newly constructed Eastern Motorway. This is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the capital, aimed at ensuring efficient traffic flow and easing the historic center from intense vehicle movement. The construction of the traffic project began in May 2021 and was carried out in two stages. The completed section, connecting Piedrujas Street and Gustava Zemgala Avenue, is 2.8 kilometers long. Its construction significantly speeds up access to the Purvciems, Pļavnieki, Dārzciems, and Teika neighborhoods, which were previously only accessible through densely populated areas with frequent traffic jams. The construction of the Eastern Motorway was complex and large-scale, involving not only the creation of a new road section but also significant infrastructure improvements. As part of the project, two overpasses were built – the Ieriķu and Dzelzava Street overpass and the Madona Street overpass, ensuring traffic efficiency and connectivity between major city roads. The first phase involved the construction of underground utilities, the creation of embankments and retaining walls, as well as the installation of supports for the overpass. The second stage completed crucial works, including the construction of engineering communications, the installation of rainwater drainage systems and an new road surface. The motorway is equipped with new traffic management tools, ensuring safe and efficient traffic flow for both light vehicles and trucks.
