Project completion period: 2022.-2023.

Project description: In Jūrmala, a floating solar power station has been constructed on the water treatment plant's basin, making it the first of its kind in the Baltic. This unique project is an important step towards energy independence and sustainable resource use. As part of the project, approximately 4,000 solar panels were installed on a floating pontoon system covering an area of 2 hectares. The station's capacity reaches 2.1 megawatts (MW), and all the electricity produced will be used to power the operations of SIA "Jūrmalas ūdens" facilities, including wastewater treatment processes. This will help stabilize water utility tariffs and reduce electricity purchase costs in the future. The innovative technology of the floating solar power station includes bifacial solar panels that can capture both direct sunlight and light reflected from the water surface. Additionally, natural cooling from the water helps maintain optimal panel performance even in high-temperature conditions. The station also reduces the growth of algae in the basin, promoting more efficient water treatment. The implementation of the project required special solutions – the pontoon system was adapted to changes in water levels, and it also takes into account the optimal capture of sunlight during different seasons. Thanks to these solutions, maximum energy efficiency and sustainability benefits are achieved.
